Reflections on the Mandalay Bay Massacre

When horrible things happen, we find ourselves asking, “Why?”

What was going on in his head? How can someone become this disturbed and evil?

It’s natural to think this way—our brains are designed to make meaning of our experiences.

We reason and obsess, and still no answers. We drive ourselves crazy trying to figure it out.

But even if we understood, would it ease the pain?

I doubt it. And it wouldn’t bring back those who died.

Years ago one of my BFFs said something I’ll never forget—“Karin, you’re trying to use your rational mind to comprehend the irrational. You’ll never find a logical answer to explain illogical behavior.”

I try to remember this during times like these.

We can’t make sense of the senseless.
